Our Spring Topic – Australia
This term we will be learning some exciting new things.
This term we are learning all about Australia. We are going to be learning a lot about the world around us as part of our new topic. We will use maps, atlases and globes to help us to understand new geography words and we will be comparing a place in Australia with the place we live.
We will use our map skills, drawing a bird’s eye view of our classroom. In addition, we will be using Atlases to locate England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales on a map and identifying the capital cities of the four countries. Then we will be moving on to learning the continents of the world with a focus on Australasia.
We will also continue to look at how the seasons change and how if effects the weather and our environment.
We will also be learning about different living creatures in Science. We will be looking at investigating ice and where it melts the fastest or slowest in various locations.
In our art work, we will be imitating the techniques used in aboriginal art, using these techniques as our inspiration to decorate a Boomerang. We will be drawing Winter Trees by close observation using our sketching skills to add the lines and detail with care.

It is the expectation that the children in Year 1 will read at least 3 times a week at home. They can read anything such as their RWI book, menus, adverts on the television, street signs, magazines. As long as it is recorded in their Reading Records then it counts.
School diaries need to be in school on a Friday morning to allow eligibility to pupil of the week.
Our PE day is Monday with Mrs Strong. Please ensure the children bring the correct PE uniform and remove or cover earrings prior to the lesson.
